What are you studying/doing for your career at the moment and how do you feel your time at STC helped you get to where you are now?

Currently, I’m working as a Systems Analyst in the Information Management Unit at the Ministry for Health. I had always contemplated continuing my studies to enhance my abilities and obtain more qualifications for career advancement opportunities. As a result, in 2017 I decided to go to back to school. In September of that year I started my first course (Diploma in Computing) with STC, as STC offers very interesting courses. After finalising the diploma I went ahead to apply for the BSc(Hons) in Cybersecurity. Having a full-time job and undertaking a part-time degree course at times was quite challenging, but I always tried to remember the end goal: attaining a degree qualification. At STC, I found comprehensive and helpful lecturers and staff that helped me do just that.

Would you recommend STC to students considering a career in computing and business, if yes, why?

As the current Covid situation demonstrates, I think that the future is in IT. Therefore, if you always wanted to start studying and maybe get a job in this sector, do not think twice, go ahead start today. Digital era is now more than ever.

What position do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

In the next 5 years I see myself working for the government or for a financial organisation, being part of their cybersecurity team. Preventing, fighting, and investigating attacks and improving their system.

What are you studying/doing for your career at the moment and how do you feel your time at STC helped you get to where you are now?

Currently I am finishing my final semester in BSc Computer Science & Systems Engineering and enrolling for career position in the IT industry as a Software Developer/Engineer. My time at STC served as a foundation for the start of my journey in the field of Computer Science. The course at STC exposed me to trending technologies and a big range of IT-related subjects, giving me a holistic learning experience of both theory and practice in the computing domain.

Would you recommend STC to students considering a career in computing and business, if yes, why?

Definitely. STC has always welcomed students who want to start their journey in computing and business by offering us a tailored learning experience and degree pathway and preparing us for our own individual future careers. In this way each student was given individual focus and attention throughout their learning experience because a lot of attention is given to personal development at STC. Not to mention that the administration and academic staff are highly experienced and passionate when it comes to guiding students.

What position do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Following the completion of my academic degree, I aim to continue learning and practicing my skills through continued dedication and the same principles that serve as STC’s motto: Learn, Achieve and Inspire. In the next 5 years I see myself practicing software engineering at an advanced level, and possibly teaching other students entering in the computing domain.

Academically, my goal is to reach a Masters level in Computer Science and depending on which direction my personal life and career lead me to, I may also pursue a doctorate level degree.

What are you studying/doing for your career at the moment and how do you feel your time at STC helped you get to where you are now?
Currently I am attending the (MQF Level 5) First Year of a 3 year Computing Degree at STC with the Wolverhampton University. STC gave me the opportunity to change my direction into the world of computing since I came from a completely different academic background. They helped me through the whole transition with a lot of support from both Lecturers and the administration team who were all pushing me to achieve my best, whilst simultaneously helping me to develop my academic skills and lending my CV a great deal of Credibility.

Would you recommend STC to students considering a career in computing and business, if yes, why?
I would recommend STC to anyone who wants to seek a career within the Computing and Business Sector. Not only will you always be greeted with big smiles from both the administration and the lecturers, but you will also be given a lot of one-on-one attention and understanding towards your own particular background. Regardless of whether we were set up in a classroom or online due to covid health restrictions, the lecturers never failed to deliver interesting and engaging lectures whilst always providing any support we may have needed.

What position do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
STC’s Diploma First Year Course is preparing me to head into a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science which will allow me to work as a Software Developer / Engineer. This has always been my dream career path, with the goal in mind that someday I will be managing my own Software development company and pursuing all of my own original ideas.

What are you studying/doing for your career at the moment and how do you feel your time at STC helped you get to where you are now?

I am currently in my second year of studying Business at STC Higher Education. Before commencing with the course, I was unsure of what education path I was going to take in order to pursue a career in the future. However, one meeting with the Director of STC is all it took to convince me that the Business Degree Pathway they offered was meant for me.

Throughout my time at STC, the students have been provided with individual attention. With that being said, at STC you are not just a number. This specialised attention has allowed me to receive the assistance I required and has helped me develop skills and knowledge relevant to my studies.

In addition, the lecturers at STC have played an important role in helping me get to where I am at right now. Each lecturer is eager to ensure that all students are keeping up with the topics each module has to offer. Furthermore, they reassure that students are working at their full potential by providing us with real-life business-related scenarios which will be useful to us later on in our careers.

Finally, the structure of the course is what is most helpful to students at STC. At the beginning of the academic year, we are provided with a schedule of all lectures that will be held throughout the year. This convenience has helped me plan out my studies from day one; which has therefore reduced the unnecessary stress and anxiety most students would experience when trying to balance their duties on and off camp.

Would you recommend STC to students considering a career in computing and business, if yes, why?

I would definitely recommend STC to other students. Prior to studying at STC Higher Education, I had little to no knowledge on Business studies; Nonetheless, I was able to grasp the different ideologies that are highlighted in each module of the course.

The course has provided me with the opportunity to understand managerial systems and their effect on business organisations, as well as the opportunity to develop my digital literacy skills through the use of various software applications used in the business world.

What position do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

In the next five years, I hope to take further my knowledge, abilities, and skills by pursuing my master’s degree in luxury brand management and marketing.

I Chose the NCC MQF Level 5 Diploma in Computing because…

I have been interested in obtaining a qualification in computing since a very young age. I Chose the NCC MQF Level 5 Diploma in Computing because after several years working in the engineering industry, I realised that computing has grown to become an essential requirement during everyday business across different fields.

The Diploma course is helping me…

The Diploma course is helping me to combine both engineering and computing knowledge to achieve greater results at work. My lecturers were very understanding of the different requirements each student requires. Something which I think is important in this environment as each part-time student comes from different fields, experiences and commitments. This required the lecturers to approach each student differently to help them achieve their individual goals.

The best part of the course…

The best part of the course was considered one of the more complicated modules, programming. I truly enjoyed coding, which also helped me further understand programming and its best practices.

The facilities at STC…

The facilities at STC are in a very central and peaceful area. As a part-time student rushing to his lectures after a day’s work, the last thing on my mind is to find parking. At STC, parking is easy, releasing an added stress from following a part-time course. STC is also great because the staff is extremely understanding, and flexible. Helping the student follow the modules at the rate that the student can follow, due to their other work and life commitments. The students can follow either one module at a time, two modules, or skip a module entirely, as they handle their other commitments.

After I complete my course…

After completing my course, I was given the opportunity to further my computing experience at work, and to continue my studies by pursuing a part-time top-up degree in Computer Sciences with Middlesex University. I would recommend this course to anyone who would like to pursue a new career in IT, and who has other commitments in both work and life. STC helps organise your modules so you can either do the course at a slower pace or at a faster pace. In my case, I was able to complete the Diploma in Computing part-time in under a year.

My recommendation to someone who feels stuck with their education….

My recommendation to someone who feels stuck with their education is to take the plunge and the chance to achieve another qualification, whether in their field or in a different field altogether. The qualification you achieve will always remain yours to keep, and an asset for your future. I say never stop trying to achieve something greater in life and yearn for greater knowledge.

Raphael Ellul Falzon

I Chose the NCC MQF Level 5 Diploma in Computing because…

…I wanted a new challenge in life.

The Diploma course is helping me…

…to further my studies by allowing me to continue my career pathway so as to get a degree in computer sciences.

The lecturers…

were knowledgeable and available for help whenever needed.

The best part of the course…

is knowing that hard work is appreciated and respected.

The facilities at STC…

…are great. The classrooms are always clean, have air-conditioning and have good Wi-Fi. Furthermore a cafeteria is also available on campus.

STC is great…

because it is welcoming no matter your background or experience.

After I complete my course…

I wish to continue furthering my studies through a Masters’ degree.

I would recommend this course…

to anyone who wishes to take up a profession in computing.

My recommendation to someone who feels stuck with their education….

is to think of the big picture. Suffering a bit in the present will lead to a much brighter future.

Ghofran Elamam

I Chose the NCC MQF Level 5 Diploma in Computing/ Business because…

Having spent most of my academic years studying life sciences, I lacked a background in business-related subjects such as Finance, Economics and Marketing. At STC this has proven not to be a hindrance to successfully completing my Level 4 Diploma in Business with distinction. I so proudly assert that the experience marked an impressive milestone not merely academically, but also on conditioning my mindset to discover previously unexplored professional avenues, unleash hidden potential and set for myself massively ambitious targets to accomplish.
It is also worth mentioning that the course in its entirety represented a highly sought-after credential that is so arduously relevant and congruent with the 21st century requirements of multinational corporations and would hence grant its recipient a competitive edge and a distinguished position in recruitment circles.

As a matter of fact, forecasts published by the US Bureau of Labour Statistics indicate that the employment market is set to witness a 10% increase in career opportunities for prospective candidates emanating from business and finance-related fields over the years 2016 to 2026.
In 2016, a report published in The World Economic Forum Annual Meeting held in Davos projected that business and finance-related specialisations as well as management professions ranked first and second (amounting to 492,000 and 416,000 new vacancies) respectively in terms of job growth prospects from the year 2015 to 2020.

The Diploma course is helping me…

The course content design, delivery and learning outcomes of the Level 4 and 5 Diploma are set to equip students with sound business acumen for critically analysing business situations and challenges, developing suitable countermeasures, proposing enhancement resolutions and providing comprehensive disclosure on key business functions and disciples namely Finance, Business Economics, Business Mathematics and Statistics, Management, Human resources, Marketing & Consumer Behaviour, eCommerce, Operations Management and Information Systems.

My lecturers…

Apart from being adept in continuously monitoring student progress through numerous summative assessments and providing constructive feedback on preliminary versions of written assignments and attempted past paper questions (enabling students to rectify or adjust erroneous or deficient aspects of their final work whilst continuously upgrading it to the identifiable standards of excellence), lecturers happened to be highly seasoned professionals with extensive business world experience and industry links. Additionally, their considerable background and technical knowledge pertaining to their areas of specialisation as well as a remarkable competence in customising the course articulation strategy to suit the students’ particular needs and requirements rendered them excellently qualified to elucidating advanced business concepts and illustrating their relevant practical applications.

The best part of the course…

Pedagogically, one of the most admirable features of the academic progamme is its strikingly structured nature and its positive impact on performance and motivational levels. The course is very systemised, running five times a week sometimes even less, from nine to three thirty, with easy to grasp, comprehend and assimilate content offerring ample time for substantiating the lecture hours with thorough private study.
From an intellect-acquisition perspective, I was particularly enthralled and fascinated by the insight – broadening and pragmatically-driven attributes that characterised the constituent modules thereby incapacitating and empowering dexterous business masterminding. To cite classical examples across the various subjects:

Finance provided exposure of the stringency in financial budgeting, forecasting, and capital asset evaluation, financial statements analysis and interpretation, as well as wealth management and investment decision-making processes, to sustain the profitability of the sole trader, private corporation or public enterprise.

Economics enabled an appreciation of mastering the art and science of resource allocation and opportunity cost mitigation that instruct global and national policies through evaluating production, distribution and consumption cyclic systems.
Marketing and consumer behaviour studies is designed to segment the customer base demographically and psychographically for subsequent targeting and positioning, deploying customer retention and acquisition measures as well as for market niche development and the implementation of innovation and cost leadership market penetration strategies thereby generating the predicted profit margins.

Human resource management demonstrated the merits garnered from authentic corporate leadership in recruiting, maintaining, training, compensating and continuously nurturing the core competences of a winning workforce.
Operations management unravelled the resourceful dynamism involved in optimising value chains and synergistically coordinating the underlying key functions to conform to the specified requirements and exceed customer anticipation levels in terms of impeccable quality control and assurance, rapidity of response and delivery rates, cost-effectiveness through efficient resource utilisation and logistical executions, and the lean management of supply chains.

The facilities at STC…

Lectures and other aspects of the student’s learning experience are undertaken in fully furnished classrooms and well-equipped on-campus laboratories with access to library facilities and its ancillary learning resources. Students are also offered the opportunity to observe and experience first-hand the practical dimension of the theoretical principles tackled during lecture hours through the organisation of business site visits. Classrooms boast high standards of hygienic and ergonomic properties in terms of layout, design, temperature control and fire safety and are fully equipped with PC/laptop devices, sound systems, projectors. The institution’s establishment and exteriors are well-maintained and periodically refurbished.

STC is great because….

Meticulous guidance and instruction for personal and professional development by the institution’s administration acts as a substantiating scaffolding of mentorship and enlightenment throughout the students’ academic journey. The ‘Learn, Achieve & Inspire’ slogan championed by STC Higher Education is not merely preached but evidently practiced and proves to successfully yield visible outcomes. The administration is also highly commendable for adopting an open door policy and for efficiently handling student concerns and processing their requests in a satisfactory manner.

After I complete my course…

The Level 4 and the successive Level 5 diploma qualifications rendered me eligible to complete and graduate with a first class Bachelor of Arts degree in International Business Administration (Honours) through the Top Up entry pathway offered by Middlesex University Malta. I am currently in the process of complementing the undergraduate qualification with its postgraduate counterpart by enrolling in the Master of Arts in International Business Management programme (with numerous other post-graduate qualifications under consideration). The top-up year is designed to complement the plethora of theoretical foundations tackled in the preceding years with numerous transferable skills for its candidates by promoting quality academic research, developing critical appraisal proficiencies, supporting the objective analysis, assimilation and synthesisation of conclusions from scholarly literature and the fostering of teamwork leadership skills through collaborative projects This will serve to ultimately prime students’ strategic management and innovation-incorporation abilities as future business leaders.

I would recommend this course…

to prospective candidates gravitating towards business domains concerned with the globalisation of world economies, the strategic management of the multinational firm and the coordination of international commercial trade activities. The academic programme is to yield relatively immediate and significant return on investment as a number of STC graduates have successfully landed corporate roles with reputable commercial enterprises and a number of others students have readily launched their entrepreneurial endeavours on completion of a broad selection of business modules.

My recommendation to someone who feels stuck with their education….

Upon embarking on an academic course that escalates to a higher level and may be more challenging and demanding than previous editions, consider the fact that an acclimitisation process is initially required for you to more clearly resolve the most suitable approach to comprehending, assimilating and effectively deploying the learning objectives of the course and successfully grasp its learning outcomes. Once the most workable and optimally results-generating strategy is determined, it becomes a matter of investing the necessary time and diligent effort to incorporate the study material. The golden rule is to decipher the underlying pattern and practise repetitively until knowledge of the subject is ultimately perfectly mastered.
One of the most advantageous attributes of the NCC- endorsed courses, is that students are not thrust into obscurity with regards to the performance standards and evaluation criteria as moderators’ expectations in terms of learning objectives and learning outcomes are clearly communicated to prospective students in the NCC authored study guides. Furthermore, recommendations for the relevant textbooks, a complete set of the constituent units comprising each module and the accompanying marking schemes for each assessment task be it an examination or an assignment are compiled in electronic format and are readily accessible through the student online portal.

Never hesitate to seek professional assistance and support from your esteemed lecturers who can diagnose the source of weakness dissuading you from reaching the required standard or accomplishing what you aspire for and consequently advice you on the remedial action to be pursued. Take it as an opportunity to fuel your motivation further and relentlessly hustle and grind through to accomplish what you have set your mind for you.

Failure on first attempt is not necessarily an assertion that you are incapable of achieving your objectives. It is highly essential not to surrender to your disappointment and to not consider it as a setback or disheartenment as at some instances failure may be imperative for achieving success. On certain occasions it may be triggered by external factors such as turbulent/discomforting current personal life (extenuating) circumstances or more significantly a major incompatibility of the course with your core proficiencies as in essence ‘“Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.’’ If you emerge as invincible and transform the power of your experience to bolster you up rather than pull you down, conquer your fears and persist in your journe , you will eventually surmount challenges, realise your potential and harness the rewards of your sheer success. through the student online portal together with and the accompanying marking scheme for each assessment task be it an examination or an assignment. Students will definitely not b thrust in obscurity.

The unique learning experience at STC Higher Education serves to ignite a lifelong passion and inspiration to thrive into a lifelong independent learner, inquirer and innovator, three distinct idiosyncrasies that are so indispensable for success in today’s rapidly progressing and digitally powered dynamic business landscape.

Andrew Caruana

I took the Level 4 Diploma in Computing because…

Back in 2003 I left my higher secondary education to start working as a machine operator. I couldn’t stand the monotony of the job. I realised I needed something which challenges me, and I knew then that leaving school was my biggest mistake, since then I have been on the pursuit of making up for my shortcomings. STC gave me the opportunity I was looking for and I started studying on a part time basis.

I chose this particular course because…

I was always intrigued by computers, ever since my father got the first Pentium 2 home in 1998. I was not really sure what was happening and why but I could make this machine do tricks. I could format, install stuff and remove stuff somehow instinctively. Computers fascinated me, and I loved coming up with solutions, so I chose to continue on that path.

The diploma course is helping me…

12 years have passed since; I am a proud BSc in Internet Applications Development graduate and a current MSc student. I have had various job offers along the way and none of this would have been possible if I didn’t take that first step the IAD (International Diploma in Computer Studies) back then.

My lecturers…

Once you understand that a lecturer is not the army against you but someone who is giving you a hand to move upwards, you start seeing things from a totally different perspective. I obviously had my disagreements and frustrations throughout my studies but all the tutors I had throughout my years at STC were patient, knowledgeable and well trained to guide throughout the process.

The best part of the course

I believe that the course structure is amazing. At STC, two subjects are done over a period of months, giving students ample time for assignment work and exam preparation. Moreover, nothing is more satisfying than receiving hard-earned, great results.

On the facilities at STC

Coffees are always available, the surroundings are always clean and STC feels like home after all these years.

STC is great because…

I have seen growth in this place, not only personal and academic, but throughout the years STC has adapted to the fast, ever changing external environments. I’ve seen STC start from providing a few courses to what it is today; A higher education campus.

After I complete my course…

I believe that my next step would be Prince2 and/or Agile methodologies, a related job and a trip around the world, most probably.

My ideal job:

That would definitely by Project Management while lecturing. I just love working on things that have a start and finish date and are intense in between.

My recommendation to someone who feels stuck with their education:

If you’re ready to work hard and commit yourself to become who you want to be, STC will give you a head start.

Matthew Azzopardi Giappone

In 2016 I graduated with a first class degree in IT & Networking from Middlesex University Malta. My experience so far hasn’t been anything short of excellent! I have also been actively involved in the Student Union, where I help plan extracurricular activities and keep students engaged.

I took the Level 4 Diploma in Computing because…

I always wanted to find something I excel in. Five years ago, as I typed away my frustration over this with a friend over facebook, I realised my answer was right in front of my nose. Since then, I committed myself to computing.

I chose this particular course because…

Any reputable company embraces the fact that the computing industry is a key sector to invest in, but STC takes this to another step. STC offers a wide variety of courses including Diploma Level Courses which are industry renowned, thus ensuring a solid bedrock in both the IT and Business divisions.

The Diploma course helped me…

…expand my skill-set and gather all the necessary knowledge to further my studies in taking a specialised network-oriented BSc. degree at Middlesex University Malta. Following this, I have had numerous job opportunities which encouraged me to work even harder towards what I really wanted to achieve in my career.

Lecturers

Lecturers on campus always projected a more-than-welcome attitude and had such a positive approach towards the students making sure to provide them with constant guidance and support. Group work is still highly encouraged by mentors, which in return equips the students with the right tools for careers within the industry. This sets the right foundations to establish oneself both on a personal and also on a professional level.

The best part of the course

I like the fact that both coursework and curricula are so closely related with today’s industry which gives the student more insight about the latest security related threats and technologies found within the networking domain, especially when accompanied by practical lab sessions!

The facilities at STC

Lecture rooms are well equipped and pleasant to study in. The environment is well taken care of and kept to a high hygienic level. Needless to mention that coffee and lunch breaks are available at The Hub canteen, just the place to chat with friends, meet classmates and enjoy good coffee.

STC is great because….

…it paves the successful pathway to a professional career, be it in the Business sector or in the ever-growing IT division. STC Higher Education is the answer to all those who would like both practical and theoretical perspectives on either Business or IT careers.

After I complete my course…

I would very much like to take Android Development to further enhance my knowledge-base since I would very much like to develop smartphone apps as personal side-projects. To this day STC Higher Education is the only proud Maltese institution which is licensed to deliver the Android Development course.

My ideal job…

…would probably be a further specialisation in the technical side of what I do. I am on the way, so I am very happy.
