Mergers and Acquisitions

Many people who follow the fashion industry were interested to learn that Michael Kors took over the Jimmy Choo brand for $1.2 billion in 2017. It may not have come as a surprise when the acquisition of Versace for $2.12 billion by Michael Kors Holdings was rumoured and later confirmed during 2018. Michael Kors Holdings became Capri Holdings with a portfolio of three major fashion houses. And this merger was only one of many which occur every year. In fact, during the first nine months of 2018, $3.3 trillion worth of mergers and acquisition deals around the world were announced.

So what does an entity gain through mergers and acquisitions?

In a world which is often said to have become one large single market, a merger will allow an entity to acquire a bigger global presence. Through amalgamations and mergers new markets will be penetrated and the challenges and complexities posed by different cultures and people’s habits will be easier to understand and overcome.

Mergers and acquisitions will benefit the entity by decreasing its competition and increasing its market share, as well as providing an improved market model. The entity will expand its existing customer database by acquiring a new client list to whom it will be able to offer a wider choice of brands. It will also benefit from the expertise of the company acquired and from economies of scale and other cost-cutting measures gained from combining resources and facilities.

The CEO and chairman of Capri Holdings Limited stated in a press release that, “With the acquisition of Versace, we have now created one of the leading global fashion luxury groups in the world.”

Capri Holdings Limited is, in fact, targeting revenue of $8 billion and is aiming to diversify geographically by increasing its revenues from the Asian market. Many will be on the lookout to see what 2019 will bring to this venture.

2019 for UX

Within these last years User Experience (UX) has become one of the main drivers that help businesses succeed. According to the McKinsey Design Index (MDI) those companies who employed the proper UX procedures also saw an improvement in their financial position. So what does 2019 hold for UX?

Stories

As users are now expecting satisfactory user experience the question has shifted and morphed from one of expectation to one of quality. Rather than merely being user-friendly we need to tell stories. One of the 2019 trends will be storytelling within our apps and our websites. Stories have engaged us since we were little kids and keep doing so throughout our life. The UX challenge is to achieve a similar level of engagement whilst delivering on the premise of the app itself.

Voice

With the level of ubiquity reached by computing today UX designers need to be aware that more often than not the device available to our users might not even include a screen. These last couple of years have seen a considerable rise in smart speakers (well smart everything really…) which give us another extremely interesting way of connecting and providing a great user experience to our users, one made up by voice. Truth be told these devices are still in their infancy and need to mature but companies such as Amazon with Alexa, Google with their voice assistant and Apple with Siri are showing that they care about this mode of interaction and so should we.

Connecting everything together

Reality is that we are using more and more connected devices. With the Internet of Things (IoT) everything is receiving an online address. With this in mind one of the main trends to keep in mind for 2019 is how to enable communication with your brand across such a plethora of devices. Delivering a coherent story through the intelligent integration of different devices as users move around in their busy 2019 lives.

STC to host ADHD Malta

Maltese adult ADHD-ers (individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) are currently not served by any specific, tailored services in Malta and still experience lack of awareness and stigmatisation in their everyday environment. To help address this, ADHD Malta is organising an innovative training programme, ‘The ADHD Adult Coaching Approach’, from Monday, 7 November, 2016, to Friday, 18 November, 2016, at STC Higher Education in Pembroke, thanks to project co-financing from the Malta Community Chest Fund.

The course is suitable for various professions, including educators, special needs staff, human resource managers, sports coaches, nurses and mental health staff, social workers and counsellors.

The ADHD Adult Coaching Approach builds a ‘coach’ skills set consisting of: effective and supportive communication strategies, situation analysis and identification of strengths and challenges. It then offers methods and models for productive collaboration with an ADHD adult (or any individual).

The course consists of: a literature list, 30 hours of lectures and workshops with course trainer, Ms Marie Enbäck, and a final community service assignment (with a February 2017 deadline). A certificate from ADHD Malta and the trainer will be given to the participants who achieve 90% attendance and successfully complete the assignment (NCFHE accreditation will be applied for but cannot be guaranteed at this stage).

Ms Enbäck, an ADHD Adult Coach, has run her own practice since 2008, after graduating from the ADD Coaching Academy (USA). Alongside coaching, she has organised conferences on ADHD for professionals with international expert speakers.

She runs a non-profit network for people with ADHD and professionals and has engagements in and out of Sweden as an independent consultant. Over the past three years she has been managing a project for adult ADHD-ers in Norway. In that project Ms Enbäck wrote the study material for ADHD Adult Group Coaching, and also led the groups herself.
The documentation and the conclusions from these groups certainly indicate that ADHD Coaching can lead to progress and a more fulfilling life for adults with ADHD.
Morning and evening courses are available. For further information, contact: [email protected] or www.facebook.com/ADHDMalta.
